Cross Keys Hotel
A hotel refurbishment in Tighes Hill, Newcastle. Custom Axminster carpet, supplied and installed by JT Flooring Warehouse - set out, prepared and laid in stages around the venue's trading hours.
The brief
The Cross Keys is a working pub in Tighes Hill, and the refurbishment had to read as a lift rather than a rebuild. The carpet was the largest single surface in the room, so it had to carry the new scheme, hide the wear a public bar puts through a floor, and be walked on again the same week it was laid.
Why Axminster
Axminster is woven, not tufted - the pattern is built into the carpet as it is made, rather than printed on top of it. That means a custom design in a custom colourway, and a dense pile that holds its appearance under bar-and-gaming traffic far longer than a broadloom of the same weight. It is the reason nearly every hotel and club floor in the country is Axminster.
Setting out
Custom Axminster arrives in fixed-width rolls with a repeating pattern, so the setting-out is done before anything is cut. Seams were planned to fall away from the main walking lines and doorways, pattern match was checked roll to roll, and transitions to tile and timber were agreed on site with the drawings in hand.
Preparation and install
The old floor covering came up, the subfloor was ground back, patched and levelled, and the new carpet was direct-stuck through the trafficked areas. Our own trade-qualified crew did the lot - no subcontractors - working in stages around the venue so the pub kept trading.
Handover
Final clean, a walk-through with the operator, and the manufacturer warranty, care instructions and product documentation handed over as one set. The result is a floor built for a public bar that still looks like it was chosen, not just specified.
